UGA Mathematics Exemption Test
Please be advised that you will not be allowed to exempt a course via the DMAT if you have been registered for that course at UGA or any other institution. (In particular, you cannot withdraw from the course once it's begun and then take the exam.) Beginning in Summer 2022, students who have credit in MATH 1101 are no longer excluded from taking the DMAT in order to try to exempt MATH 1113.
The Mathematics Department strongly advises students to take the math placement exam. The department also asks that students take the exam seriously and review basic algebra and trigonometry before the exam. You will have only one attempt at the exam, and your math placement and possible exemption of a core course depend on your results. Students who receive AP credit for calculus on the Calculus AB or BC exams do not need to take the exam.
For a list of topics covered on the exam, see the department’s preparation page.
The math departmental placement exam only places students into math classes and does not award credit.
All students who have not earned credit in or exempted MATH 1113 are strongly recommended to take the math departmental placement exam. Calculators are not permitted for this exam.
- You can schedule your pre-orientation exemption exam(s) with University Testing Services (UTS). It's recommended to take the exam prior to the first day of your orientation session, however not mandatory.
Students may have earned credit in or exempted MATH 1113 by:
Scoring 3 or higher on the AP Calculus AB exam or the AP Calculus BC exam
Scoring 6 or higher on the IB Higher Level Mathematics exam
Earning dual enrollment credit in MATH 1113
A 26-question test administered during Orientation and at UTS is used to determine placement in mathematics courses. Students who score between 12 and 15 will exempt MATH 1101 (Mathematical Modeling) and may enroll in MATH 1113 (Pre-calculus).
Students who score 16 or higher will exempt MATH 1113 and may begin their University studies with MATH 2200 or MATH 2250 (Differential Calculus). No credit is given for exempted courses, but exemption of MATH 1113 or MATH 1101 may satisfy Core and/or Degree requirements.
Please note: Math Placement may only be taken once. You must be a UGA student to register for this exam.
Transfer Students with math courses that DID NOT transfer as equivalent to UGA courses are strongly recommended to take the math placement test. No credit is given for exempted courses, but exemption of MATH 1113 or MATH 1101 may satisfy core and/or degree requirements.
Exams are scored on Tuesday. Once scored, it can then take up to a week for scores to be posted to Athena.
