ALEKS PLACEMENT FAQ

What is ALEKS?

ALEKS is a powerful artificial-intelligence based assessment tool that zeros in on the strengths and weaknesses of a student’s mathematical knowledge, reports its findings to the student, and then provides the student with a learning environment for improving this knowledge to an appropriate level for course course exemption.

What is the cost?

The ALEKS Placement, Preparation and Learning Program costs $25 which you will be asked to submit on your first login.  This will give you access to 5 tries on the placement exam as well as six months of access to the Preparation and Learning Modules, allowing you to brush up on your basic Pre-Calculus skills while you study Calculus.

Can I transfer an ALEKS Placement score from completion at another institution?

No, the University of Georgia does not transfer ALEKS Placement scores from other institutions. You will need to retake the ALEKS placement test when you transfer to the University of Georgia.

When do students take ALEKS Placement?

Most students choose to take the exam prior to orientation and the first day of registration.

How long will it take?

The ALEKS Placement Assessment takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to complete.  After the assessment, an individualized Preparation and Learning Module is available for you to review and learn material, and to improve placement and eventual course outcomes.

Can I retake the ALEKS Placement Assessment?

Yes, you may take up to 5 placement assessments. However, to make each attempt worthwhile, it is important that you spend time working in your ALEKS Prep and Learning Module in between placement assessments so that you can improve your skills.

Can I retake the ALEKS Placement Assessment immediately?

You must wait 48 hours between placement assessments. There is generally no benefit to re-taking the assessment immediately after completing a prior attempt. You are unlikely to improve your results by simply re-taking the assessment without spending time in the Prep and Learning Module to refresh material that you may have forgotten or to learn new material

Does progress in an ALEKS Prep and Learning Module count toward placement?

No. You must complete a new Placement Assessment to change your placement result.  Select the placement tab in the upper right corner of the ALEKS page to start a new Placement Assessment.

How long is my score good for?

ALEKS score is good for 3 semesters (including summer).  This means, someone who started UGA in Fall and took ALEKS test during this semester would need to take Calculus in the following Spring or Summer, otherwise they will need to retest in ALEKS.

What if I failed or withdrew from MATH 1113 from UGA or another school? Can I still take ALEKS?

If a student has taken MATH 1113 (at UGA or another institution) and failed or withdrew this course, they can still take ALEKS exam.  Just a reminder though, with the ALEKS exam they won't receive the Precalculus credit officially until after they have taken and passed Calculus.  If they just need Precalculus, and don't plan on taking Calculus, ALEKS won't benefit them.

What if I choose not to take the Aleks or any other exam?

If you choose not to take any placement exams, you will have the option to take either MATH 1101 or MATH 1113.

Can I take the ALEKS even though I've taken the DMAT?

Yes.  The University will only take one score which would be the better of the two.
