Being a Graduate Student

The Department administers graduate programs leading to the Master of Arts (M.A.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees. In addition, the Department also grants the professional (and terminal) Master in Applied Mathematical Sciences (M.A.M.S.) degree. A total of 45 students are currently enrolled in graduate degree programs in the Department, 21 of whom are international students. The vast majority of these students are in the Ph.D. program. Most receive support from the Department or the University in the form of Graduate Teaching Assistantships. Some graduate students are also supported by RTG fellowships from the National Science Foundation.

Every year, the Department entertains several visiting faculty members who come to Athens to work with a specific faculty member or group. These visitors greatly enrich our graduate program by providing different insights and by being keen participants in seminars.

Our graduate students run a Graduate Student Chapter of the AMS. This organization aims to promote scholarship and fellowship among the graduate students. The Department also has an active chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM).

For many graduate students, especially at the beginning, the Department is an important part of their social life. We take pride in the friendly atmosphere in the department and in the fact that our faculty is extremely accessible to students. The faculty believes that it is especially important for a graduate student to feel comfortable and welcome to interact with faculty members. Graduate students will frequently feel free to drop by at a professor's office to ask questions.

Teas are held Monday and Thursday afternoons. The Department Lounge provides a place for many lively discussions over tea/coffee. In addition to such regular socializing, and to the typically informal atmosphere that characterizes the department, several parties and picnics are planned through the year, providing other occasions for socializing with faculty and fellow graduate students.

Each entering graduate student is assigned a faculty advisor. You may later change your advisor to the person most appropriate to advise you in your choice of research area.
