The Double Dawgs B.S./M.A. program is a joint degree program expected to take 5 years. It has stricter requirements than the usual math major, moving students directly into graduate level course work during their 3rd and 4th years of study, and adding (usually) a 5th year of 8000-level course work. The requirements are:

  • complete (with a grade of C or better) eight 3- or 4-hour MATH courses at the 3000 level or above. This may include no more than 6 credit hours among MATH 4760/6760, 4780/6780, 4790/6790, 4850, 4900, and 4950, and must include:
    • MATH 4000 or 6000 (Modern Algebra and Geometry I), and
    • at least one of
      • MATH 4100 or 6100 (Real Analysis),
      • MATH 4150 or 6150 (Complex Variables), or
      • MATH 4250 or 6250 (Differential Geometry).
  • complete 30 hours of graduate (6000 level or above) coursework which include:
    • 9 hours in 8000-level courses
    • 3 hours of MATH 7300, which includes preparation of Master's thesis.

The Double Dawgs program allows up to 12 credit hours of certain courses to satisfy both the "8 course requirement" and the "30 credit hour requirement". The allowable courses are:

The Double Dawgs program is completed in 3 steps.

  1. Enroll as a Math Major and begin with the calculus sequence.
  2. After completing at least 6 MATH hours at the 3000-level or higher with a grade of B or higher (B- does not count), students may apply to the Double Dawgs pathway by submitting a transcript and two letters of recommendation from Math faculty to the Associate Head of the Math Department. Once admitted to the pathway, students may enroll in all 6000-level courses (as well as 8000 level courses with permission of department) and are encouraged to choose as many "dual credit" courses as possible from the list above.
  3. After completing 6 MATH hours at the 4000 or 6000 level, students in the Double Dawgs pathway may apply to the graduate program by submitting a transcript and two letters of recommendation from Math faculty who have taught them at the 4000 or 6000 level. Students may choose to submit GRE scores (general and/or subject test) as well, but are not required to. Students may apply before completing their undergraduate degree, but cannot start the graduate program until they complete their undergraduate degree requirements. Students matriculated into the graduate program may enroll in 8000 level courses.

We recommend that students intending to complete the Double Dawgs program apply early to the pathway and take courses at the 6000 level (instead of the 4000 level) whenever possible. This allows for the most efficient completion of the degree program because 6000 level courses can count for both degrees. However, students with a major in progress are still encouraged to apply if interested (it may just take a few more courses to complete the program).
