Sat, 04/20/2024 - 9:30am UGA Boyd Research and Education Center The Department of Mathematics is hosting a Sonia Kovalevsky day on Saturday, April 20, 2024. This is an opportunity for all (6th, 7th, or 8th grade) middle school students to engage in a day of networking, mentoring, and fun! Event organizers are Hulya Arguz and Pierrick Bousseau, faculty at the UGA Mathematics Department. The event is free. REGISTRATION: The registration is now open and it will close on April 18th. 2024. TIME EVENT 9:30 - 10:00 Registration 10:00 - 10-45 Activity 1:Seemingly Impossible Card Tricks: 10:45 - 11:00 Break 11:00 - 11:45 Activity 2: Become a SOMA cube expert 12:00 - 13:30 Lunch break: pizza lunch will be provided 13:30 - 14:15 Activity 3: How to color terrific maps 14:15 - 14:30 Closing remarks Activity 1: Seemingly Impossible Card Tricks: Once you know the math behind these tricks, they are easy to remember and then you can shock your friends and family with your amazing abilities. Activity 2: Become a SOMA cube expert: The SOMA cube is a puzzle whose seven pieces can form a cube in 240 different ways! But solving it isn't as simple as that makes it sound. You will construct your own SOMA puzzle and be able to solve it before we're done. Activity 3: How to color terrific maps: Keys to mathematics are beauty and elegance. We will illustrate this point by coloring maps of beautiful mathematical shapes, and of imaginary lands. While doing this, we will learn how many colors are needed to fill the regions of a map, so that neighboring ones get different colors.
